Coefficient of restitution and linear dashpot model revisited

چکیده
With the assumption of a linear-dashpot interaction force, we compute the coefficient of restitution as a function of the elastic and dissipative material constants, k and γ by integrating Newton’s equation of motion for an isolated pair of colliding particles. It turns out that an expression ε(k,γ) widely used in the literature is even qualitatively incorrect due to an incorrect definition of the duration of the collision.

Simulations of dense granular gases without gravity with impact-velocity-dependent restitution coefficient
We report two-dimensional simulations of strongly vibrated granular materials without gravity. The coefficient of restitution depends on the impact velocity between particles by taking into account both the viscoelastic and plastic deformations of particles, occurring at low and high velocities respectively. Use of this model of restitution coefficient leads to new unexpected behaviors. When th...
متن کاملHysteresis and creep in powders and grains
The quasi-static mechanical response of grains under cyclic loading is studied in this contribution by means of a three-dimensional Molecular Dynamics scheme. The response of the system is characterized by an accumulation of plastic deformation with the number of cycles. For the deviatoric stress and strain, a quasi-periodic ratchet-like behavior is observed. Results are presented for different...
متن کاملDynamic response of a simplified nonlinear fluid model for viscoelastic materials under random parameters
In this paper, a simplified spring-dashpot model is proposed to represent the complicated nonlinear response of some viscoelastic materials. Recently, the viscoelastic modeling has been adopted by many researchers to characterize some parts of the human body in bioengineering and to simulate many material properties in mechanical engineering, electronic engineering and construction engineering....
متن کاملSOLVING FUZZY LINEAR PROGRAMMING PROBLEMS WITH LINEAR MEMBERSHIP FUNCTIONS-REVISITED
Recently, Gasimov and Yenilmez proposed an approach for solving two kinds of fuzzy linear programming (FLP) problems. Through the approach, each FLP problem is first defuzzified into an equivalent crisp problem which is non-linear and even non-convex. Then, the crisp problem is solved by the use of the modified subgradient method. In this paper we will have another look at the earlier defuzzifi...
متن کاملSimulations of dense granular gases in zero gravity with impact-velocity-dependent restitution coefficient
We report two-dimensional simulations of strongly vibrated granular materials in zero gravity. The coefficient of restitution depends on the impact velocity between particles by taking into account both the viscoelastic and plastic deformations of particles, occurring at low and high velocities respectively. Use of this realistic restitution coefficient leads to new unexpected behaviors. When t...
